It is also celebrated to honor and commemorate our forefathers. Fathers Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities. Contrary to popular belief, the first observance of Fathers Day actually took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. The special day was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907. The First Fathers Day Church, now the Central United Methodist Church, still stands in Fairmont today. [1] Various other sources believe (possibly because West Virginia did not officially register the holiday. [citation needed]) that the first Fathers Day was held nearly two years later on June 19, 1910 through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After listen ing to a church sermon at Spokanes Central Methodist Episcopal Church in 1909 about the newly recognized Mothers Day, Dodd felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition, as well. 2] She wanted a celebration that honored fathers like her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was left to raise his family alone when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child when Sonora was 16 years old. [3] The following year with the assistance of Reverend Dr. Conrad Bluhm, her pastor at Old Centenary Presbyterian Church (now Knox Presbyterian Church), Sonora took the idea to the Spokane YMCA. The Spokane YMCA, along with the Ministerial Alliance, endorsed Doddââ¬â¢s idea and helped it spread by celebrating the first Fatherââ¬â¢s Day in 1910. Sonora suggested her fatherââ¬â¢s birthday, June 5, be established as the day to honor all Fathers. However, the pastors wanted more time to prepare, so on June 19, 1910, young members of the YMCA went to church wearing roses: a red rose to honor a living father, and a white rose to honor a deceased one. [3] Dodd traveled through the city in a horse-drawn carriage, carrying gifts to shut-in fathers confined indoors by illness. [3] It took many years to make the holiday official. In spite of support from the YWCA, the YMCA, and churches, Fathers Day ran the risk of disappearing from the calendar. [4] Where Mothers Day was met with enthusiasm, Fathers Day was often met with laughter. [4] The holiday was gathering attention slowly, but for the wrong reasons. It was the target of much satire, parody and derision, including jokes from the local newspaper Spokesman-Review. [4] Many people saw it as the first step in filling the calendar with mindless promotions. [4] A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. 5] In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Fathers Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. [3] US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. [6] In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus [singling] out just one of our two parents[6] In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Fathers Day. [3] Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. [3][6] In 2010, the Fathers Day Centennial Celebration[7] occurs in Spokane with a month of events commemorating the day. In addition to Fathers Day, International Mens Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19 for men and boys who are not fathers. [edit ] Commercialization The Associated Mens Wear Retailers formed a National Fathers Day Committee in New York City in the 1930s, which was renamed in 1938 to National Council for the Promotion of Fathers Day and incorporated several other trade groups. [8] This council had the goals of legitimizing the holiday in the mind of the people and managing the holiday as a commercial event in a more systematic way, in order to boost the sales during the holiday. [8] This council always had the support of Dodd, who had no problem with the commercialization of the holiday and endorsed several promotions to increase the amount of gifts. 9] In this aspect she can be considered the opposite of Anna Jarvis, who actively opposed all commercialization of Mothers Day. [9] The merchants recognized the tendency to parody and satirize the holiday, and used it to their benefit by mocking the holiday on the same advertisements where they promoted the gifts for fathers. [10] People felt compelled to buy g ifts even though they saw through the commercial facade, and the custom of giving gifts on that day became progressively more accepted. [10] By 1937 the Fathers Day Council calculated that only one father in six had received a present on that day. 10] However, by the 1980s, the Council proclaimed that they had achieved their goal: the one-day event had become a three-week commercial event, a second Christmas. [10] Its executive director explained back in 1949 that, without the coordinated efforts of the Council and of the groups supporting it, the holiday would have disappeared. [10] [edit] Spelling Although the name of the event is usually understood as a plural possessive (i. e. day belonging to fathers), which would under normal English punctuation guidelines be spelled Fathers Day, the most common spelling is Fathers Day, as if it were a singular possessive (i. . day belonging to Father). In the United States, Dodd used the Fathers Day spelling on her original petition for the h oliday,[2] but the spelling Fathers Day was already used in 1913 when a bill was introduced to the U. S. Congress as the first attempt to establish the holiday,[5] and it was still spelled the same way when its creator was commended in 2008 by the U. S. Congress. [11] [edit] Dates around the world The officially recognized date of Fathers Day varies from country to country. This section lists some significant examples, in order of date of observance.

Single Parenting Single parents and their children constitute a rapidly increasing population. In the past single parenting was seen as a broken system, these units today provide a viable alternative to nuclear families (Kleist, 1999, p. 1). History Of China Between 1810 And 1911 - 2250 Words
Title: A century in the development of China The political progress in China between 1810 and 1911 was directly impacted by two sets of sentiments and a variety of western ideologies. Firstly, Western imperialistic forces exacerbated the domestic crises in China, engendering strong anti-foreign feelings. This resentment blended with the long existing anti-Qing (the last feudalism dynasty) sentiment, which had been fermenting since seventeen century among the majority Ethnic Han Chinese. These two sentiments facilitated the development of common national identity, which played an adhesive part in the political progress. Secondly, Western political ideologies were used as guiding frameworks for the Chinese political leaders in theirâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is a process of different political experimentations with various Western ideologies to construct Chinese political systems, in the attempt to get rid of the ancient Confucianism orthodoxy and counter the western imperial forces. In the essay, I will first lay the groundwork for this discussion by introducing the background of late-Qing dynasty before the first opium war, mainly regarding to its ignorance and arrogance of the western powers and its lack of unified national identity. I will go on to analyze how the Opium War changed the Qingââ¬â¢s stagnant status quo, and how the changes led to major revolutions and reforms in this period, such as the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), the Self-Strengthening Movement (1860-1890), the Hundred Dayââ¬â¢s Reform (1898), and the Xinhai Revolution (1911). I will use these historical events to illustrate how the political leaders used the two intertwined sentiments as fuel, and used the western political ideologies as frameworks for their political movements. The significance and radicalness of the political changes China went through after the Opium War and the impact of the Western ideologies cannot be fully understood if we do not take into account the endurance of the feudalism system. The feudalism system, as a central part of the Chinese civilization, had continued without interruption for a few thousand years. Indeed,

Question: Discuss about the Organizational Control Process. Answer: Critical analysis of Control Process The control process is a continuous or on-going organizational process to monitor and evaluate the performances of the employees. This process is the direction of the organizational control that directs the employees for the achievement of the organizational goals and objectives. The control process drives from the strategic plans and goals of the organization that is embedded in the each level of hierarchy. This is a forward looking process that is an important part of the performance management of the employees (Cliffs Notes, 2016). This essay will provide an understanding of the control process used in the organizations by identifying and analyzing different steps or elements of the control process and its contribution to the performance management of the employees within the organization. The control process is a performance management process that involves collecting information about the organizational processes, people, group of people, and systems in order to make appropriate decisions about these. This is a functional organizational process for controlling the performances of the individuals that arise from the strategic plans and goals. This is reviewing and evaluating the performances of the processes, people, and systems against the established performance metrics or standards. The control process is important for the organizations to direct the organizational human resources, processes, and systems to works as per set vision, mission statement, goals, values, and strategic plans for the achievement of the business objectives and targets (Boundless, 2016). This has four steps- establishment of standards, measurement of performances, comparison of the performances, and corrective actions. On the basis of the control steps, there are five elements of the control process including setting of the performance standards, measuring actual performance, comparing actual performance with standards, analyzing deviations, and taking corrective action. (Source: Steps in Control Process) Establishment or fixing of the performance standards or measures is the first element of the control process that provides a basis to set the performance criteria or measurements for comparing with the activities or performance levels of the organizational processes, systems, and workforce or employees (Griffin, and Moorhead, 2013). These standards are performance metrics or benchmarks that are derived from the strategic plans or goals and will assist to measure the performances of the employees against the set standards. The standards may be qualitative (improving labor relations, brand reputation and goodwill, quality of products, and motivation level of the employees) and quantitative (cost incurred, revenue earned, units produced and sold, amount of inventory, and time taken in performing tasks). The standards may be tangible (clear, concrete, specific, measurable, numerical standards, monetary, physical, or time standards) and intangible (desirable attitudes, high morale, ethics , and cooperation). The performance standards or metrics will measure the performances of the employees on the basis of sales targets, production targets, gross profits, safety records and work attendance goals achieved or not (Masterson, 2017). The second element of the control process involves measurement of the actual performance by using the measurement techniques, such as personal reports, customer feedbacks, sample checking, and personal observation, and comparative statistical analysis (Reimer and Houmanfar, 2017). The performance reports, such as gross profit ratio, debt turnover ratio, current ratio, and return on investment will be used for measuring the performance of the employees. The actual performance will be measured against the set performance standards for detecting the deviations or performance gaps that will determine whether the work or tasks are continuing in the right direction as per strategic plans and goals or not. For example, the formal reports are prepared by the managers of the most of the organizations. The qualitative performance, such as human relations, employee morale, customer attending, and service quality offered will be measured through the customer surveys, feedback reports, or psychol ogical tests. While, on the other hand, the sales reports, numerical surveys, oral reporting, feedback reports, and written reports will be used to measure the quantitative performances of the employees (Venkatesh, 2015). The third element of this process is comparing the actual performance of the employees or individuals against the expected performance standards in order to find the performance gap or deviation of the performance. After reviewing and evaluating the sales reports, customer feedbacks and survey reports, and personal observations, the evaluator or managers identify whether the actual performance meets, exceeds or fall short of the performance standards that will determine the variation or difference in the form of deviation or performance gaps (Chand, 2013). PERT, Budgetary control, Benchmarking, Balance Score Card, Goals-setting, and Management by Objectives are some important performance measurement techniques. For ex- the customer feedback or survey reports will measure and analyze the customer services delivery, numbers of visits, customers handling capability, and customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction. The sales reports or statistical analysis will show the level of profits, re venues, sales targets, production outputs achieved that will be compared with the set performance goals or targets. The balance scorecard method will examine their performances by giving the grades or performance marks on their performances on the basis of set criteria (Griffin, Neal, and Parker, 2007). The fourth element of the control process is to find-out the deviations and causes for the deviations that will be analyzed to adopt the ways for the improvement of performance or correction of the areas for improvement. Obsolete machinery, defective processes, failure or breakdown of the production technologies and machineries, defective or low quality material used, and defective or unfavorable physical conditions are major causes of deviation. Critical Point Control and Management by Exception are such areas for identifying and analyzing the performance gaps or deviations. The deviations may be either positive or negative (Banerjee, 2015). The positive deviation occurs when the actual performance is better or exceeds than the performance standards or measures, while the negative deviation takes place when the actual performance is lower or falls short of the performance standards. The small deviations may be ignored and in opposite to this, the major deviations will be addressed a nd reported to the top management for taking the corrective actions. The final element of the control process is taking the corrective actions and follow-up after analyzing the deviations and causes for the deviations. If the deviation or performance gaps are small, will be underestimated or negotiated (iEdu Note, 2016). In opposite to this, if these are higher or exceeds of the acceptable limits, then these will be reported to senior management so that the corrective actions should be taken by the management. The corrective actions may include providing better direction, motivation and participative leadership, changing culture and working procedures, changing performance standards, setting of new goals and strategic plans, better training, use of technological advancements and innovation, health and safety of the workplace, productive and learning culture, Autonomy and flexibility of the working practices, reducing breakdown or failure of machineries, and standardized organizational processes. The corrective actions should be well balanced by avoidi ng over controlling of the performances (Bratianu and Constantin 2015). After taking corrective actions, the management should follow-up to find-out whether the corrective actions are taken or not. The causes of deviations will be removed for ensuring better performance against the performance standards. After analyzing the controlling process and its elements, it is advised for the Australian companies or MNCs to use the control process as a tool for improving the performances of the organizational processes, systems, and employees to the great extent (Perkins and Arvinen-Muondo, 2013). In order to create an effective control process, the companies should determine whether the vision, mission statements, and objectives will assist to determine the goals and strategic elements in order to meet the strategic goals. The reviewing the controlling processes will assist to look into the supply chain management operations, production processes and technologies, sufficient resources, communication technologies, training and development programs for the effectiveness of the organizational functioning. Marxism will not return as a major ideology in the 21st century
Marxism will not return as a major ideology in the 21st century Introduction During the 19th century, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels developed a world view theory referred to as Marxism (Player 165). So far, this theory has been severally reviewed by other scholars and political philosophers who have offered their own perspectives. Some of the inherent perspectives that have been developed to date include eco-socialism, Marxist humanism, feminism and Christian Marxism.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Marxism will not return as a major ideology in the 21st century specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As a theory, Marxism has four main elements that are closely related and which may largely assist towards understanding how society transformed as well as evolved over the years especially among the capitalist economies. As a matter of fact, some of the elements of change that have characterized transformation in society include materialistic approach to history, social class divisions, d ialectical approach to historical changes and commitment to socialism (Player 166). It is also imperative to underscore the fact that during the very 19th century period, Marxism was adopted as the main ideology in running the communistââ¬â¢s governments that were spreading all over the world. Initially, the ideology was first introduced in Canada by the British intellectuals and as a result, it ended up dominating the ideals and major principles of the socialist parties in the country (Player 165). However, it is evident that Marxism began to stagnate in the 20th century due to several interconnected reasons. We may also not ignore to mention that since Marxism theories have been critiqued by scholars, certain pieces of opinions have also developed which tend to assert that these theories may not be suitable in the 21st century (Hundelson 259). This paper explores some of the theories on Marxism and argues that the latter may not be suitable or applicable in the 21st century. A brief overview of Marxism It is apparent that, in order to understand why Marxism is not suitable as a major ideology in the 21st century, it is important to have an overview of what the theory is all about. It is also worthy to mention that, the proponents of Marxism targeted to fight self- emancipations that existed among the working class people. In a more subjective manner, it also aimed at eliminating any form of domination of the bourgeoisies against the poor in society. As a result, Marxism gradually progressed and came up with movements that fought against all forms of domination by virtue of gender, race and social class. According to the Marxistsââ¬â¢ view, the only way of decimating manifold domination and exploitation was through liberating the working lass from being oppressed by rich employers. In the process, Marxism gave birth to a socialism movement that was destined to eradicate all forms of institutional sadism. Meanwhile, in the process of destroying the conce ntration of power among specific classes of people in society, Marxism aimed to empower and strengthen workersââ¬â¢ movements (Row thorn 26). Karl Marx and Friedrich had already realized that workers freedom was greatly limited by the wealthy elites (Keynes 9).Advertising Looking for essay on political sciences? Karl Marx argued that workers freedom could not be enhanced by limiting their autonomy but rather facilitating individual participation in the economy (Rowthorn 26). In this case, the freedom was to be achieved by use of a theoretical approach. In addition to this, Marxism applied practical critiques through political actions (Hundelson 261). Therefore, the theorist mobilized masses of people to oppose certain manifold dominations. However, since Marxism had different faces, there were no specifically set principles in the sense that no face could embody any historic achievement in the entire process. In this case, the movement and its integral concerns adopted the name of its key proponent namely Karl Marx. Meanwhile, irrespective of the many contributions of Marxismââ¬â¢s, the movement has several shortcomings. Criticisms of the movement have originated from a political point of view. In other words, democratic socialists declined to accept the views of Marxism on the issue of socialism (Rowthorn 34). According to Karl Marx, socialism could only be achieved through class conflict and grassroots, revolution. Contemporarily, there are very few supporters of Marxist ideology as opposed to other movements such as liberalism and democracy. Moreover, the basic fundamentals of Marxism that have been criticized by thinkers creating a negative illusion in peoples mind (Sowell 112).That not wi thstanding, it is imperative to understand why the theory was highly criticized as a major ideology of the century. Critiques of Marxism Considering the intellectual basis of Marxism, one of the main fundamentals was on historical materialism. According to Karl Marx, advancement in technology and modes of productions impact a change on the social relations (Keynes 8). However, this view has some limitations because it fails to consider the superstructure of the society. Such factors include ethnicity, culture, religion and political views. According to this view, Karl Marx tends to overlook both the real and perceived causes of economic underdevelopment. With Marxism, there is a general perception that material factors such as technology are the main causes of economic decline. He bases economic development on law, politics, morality and religion. According to Marxist critics, Karl Marx oversimplified nature of the society on their impact on economic development (Rowthorn 26). The c ontroversy here is that, the theory does not bring out clearly whether it is the material factor or the superstructure of the society that influence development. Furthermore, thinkers have argued that though Marxism theory is testable there is lot of falsified facts.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Marxism will not return as a major ideology in the 21st century specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Therefore, it is arguable that the issue of historical materialism is very narrow to act as a pedestal for indulging the complexity and numerous power structures. In this case, there is a conventional twist that rules out the scientific status of Marxism. In the 21st century, we need a theory that will emphasize on the possible factors that are responsible in enhancing development (Player 165). It is also vivid that Marxism does not put into consideration the role and effect of governments on the capitalist system of productio n. Karl Marx asserts that economic investors and businessmen need monopoly over their businesses (Rowthorn 43). While the latter approach towards economic empowerment sounds awesome, Marxists did not consider that capitalism can collapse the very economy it defends and that exclusive monopoly could result to social revolution. Instead, Karl Marx perceived capitalistic monopoly as, an inherent tendency towards to overcome fiscal and ecological crises (Keynes 7). Moreover, he perceived that capitalist system would eradicate poverty, unemployment, disparity, disaffection and environmental destruction once every individual was given an opportunity to participate in production. Karl Marx fails to understand that, capitalist system can not collapse on its own but as a result of resource depression (Hundelson 264). However, it is evident that when businesses monopolize the market forces it can be dangerous and this requires the government to regulate the market forces. Failure to regulate investments results to capitalism system reaching its final stage. Optimum trust and monopoly in businesses affect the regular and natural mode in which the economy is run by the government (Sowell 117). In another words, total monopoly eradicate government regulation through unionization and legislations. Predictably, thinkers argue that such a state can result to economic collapse in a country. In this case, if the theory is applicable in the 21st century, there is n way we can overcome problems associated with monopolistic nature of the current investments (Sowell 120). Additionally, Marxism theory assumes that there are other factors other than the economy that that drives history (Keynes 12). According to some thinkers, considering economy as the only drive for history may be quite a narrow and oversimplified way of revisiting such a theory.Advertising Looking for essay on political sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Needless to say, economy as a factor cannot be used to explain the history of civilization (Sowell 118). Thinkers feel that, in order to understand civilization, we need to use superstructures of a particular society in order to examine the struggles and achievements up to the contemporary period (Keynes 8). Moreover, though Karl Marx figures out human superstructure as source of underdevelopment, it is vivid that, in as much as man needs freedom he requires a bit of barbarism such as tribalism and racism. This helps him to explore himselves and finally establishes his identity. This implies that, to some extent conflict is inevitable and thus important in shaping manââ¬â¢s destiny. In one way or the other, conflict triggered competition, responsibility and increased human experience. Due to this reason, anarchists feel that, 21st century deserves a more realistic theory that will put into account the idea of self-realization. Finally, thinkers and scholars perceive that Marxism is vulnerable to corruption by the fact that all the means of productions are at the hands of private citizens (Sowell 112). As mentioned earlier, the fact that Karl Marx assumed the role of government in regulating production, the effects is that there will be no revenues to run a state. Lack of strict regulation of wealth by the government will deprive the state from getting funds obtained from taxes (Govind 75). This also gives people the freedom to conduct businesses on their own means and thus some wealth might be created through unethical strategies. In this case, anarchists find this theory unsuitable since it will bring revolutions that have the exact nature of those that they are struggling to overthrow. Considerably, Marxism creates ample conditions for the socialists who destruct the normal nature of a state (Keynes 18). This implies that, the anarchist campaign against Marxism reduces its chances to return as a major ideology in the 21st century. Conclusion To recap it a ll, it is factual that Marxism is outdated and can hardly stand as a major ideology in the progressive and dynamic 21st century socio-political and economic life. Although Karl Marxââ¬â¢s theory appears consistent, the assumptions are extremely disputed. This has been attributed by the complex errors and ambiguities identified when the theory was being analyzed by scholars. Furthermore, Marxism has failed to provide an accurate theoretical framework that can rescue the world states from capitalist totalitarianism. Indeed, even the existing framework lacks coherence and means of accessibility especially among developing countries. Proactively, the 21st century era demands a theory that is independent of religious and close-minded fanatics.
